Madagascar's Amphibians
Three orders of amphibians are inventoried in the world: frogs, salamanders and caecilians. Only frogs are found in Madagascar. Almost 10% of the world’s frogs are endemic to Madagascar, an extraordinary richness of amphibians for an island that makes up only 0.4% of the land area of the globe.
Six families are found in Madagascar:
- Hyperoliidae
- Mantellidae
- Ptycadenidae
- Microhylidae
- Dicroglossiadae
- and Bufonidae
About 340 species are inventoried in Madagascar, but DNA barcoding has revealed more than 500 species on the island, so at least 200 remain to be formally described (Perl et al. 2014).
Except from the two introduced species: Hoplobatrachus tigerinus and Duttaphrynus melanosticus, all of the Malagasy amphibians are endemic to the island, and for most groups, the endemism extends to the level of genera, subfamilies, and one endemic family : the Mantellidae.
According of the IUCN Red List of Species (2016), one hundred fifty eight (158) species were found to be threatened:
- 20 Critically Endangered
- 76 Endangered
- 43 Vulnerable
- and 19 Near Threatened.
